Days 1-2 Beijing Begin this Beijing adventure on a tour of the newly restored Temple of Heaven accompanied by a local guide. The remainder of the day is free to explore this remarkable city. Perhaps head to the nearby Hong Qiao Market to track down a bargain, shop for fabric at the Xiushui Silk Market or catch a rickshaw to explore back lanes, byways and other hidden treasures. Make sure to leave time for Tiananmen Square, as walking around this huge meeting area is a remarkable experience.
Days 3-5:Beijing to Lhasa The new Qinghai-Tibet Railway is the highest in the world, climbing from 2,829 m above sea level at Golmud to 3,641 m at Lhasa. Its highest point is in the Tanggula Pass, just over 5,000 m above sea level. Enjoy the journey in the comfort of a train equipped with a special oxygen system for those high ascents. Watch the spectacular
scenery roll by and chat with locals in the dining car.
